"It is generally agreed that the lawyer for the defence plays a decisive role in the workings of criminal justice. It is on the basis of a description of the characteristics peculiar to this role that we shall attempt to analyze the practices and procedures involved in settling criminal cases. We shall pay special attention to bargaining practices between the defence and the Crown when there is a guilty plea"--Introduction, p. [1].
