"Canada is committed to the protection of human rights at home and abroad. With this aim, it has made a range of international and domestic commitments, and works closely with like-minded states to advance respect for human rights. National laws and regulations, including the Export and Import Permits Act (EIPA), also aim to prevent Canada and Canadians from contributing to serious violations of internationally recognized human rights or serious violations of international humanitarian law abroad. It is with this in mind that the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights undertook a study to examine available economic levers that can be used to enhance respect for human rights, with particular focus on the EIPA"--Executive summary, p. 9.
