"The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance (our committee) has an important role to play on behalf of Parliament and Canadians in examining the federal government's spending plans, as outlined in the main and supplementary estimates. The 2018-19 Main Estimates were tabled in the Senate on April 17, 2018 and referred to the Standing Senate on National Finance for review on April 18, 2018. In order to examine the 2018-19 Main Estimates, our committee held seven meetings and questioned officials of fifteen federal organizations that are requesting total voted appropriations of approximately $69 billion, which is 61% of the total voted amount requested in the main estimates. We also met with officials from the Office of the Parliamentary Budget Officer. This report highlights issues discussed during our examination of the main estimates and presents our observations on key concerns facing each organization"--Introd., p. 5.
