Bedford Institute of Oceanography towing winch investigation / prepared for K. Manchester, Atlantic Geoscience Centre, Geological Survey of Canada, Bedford Institute of Oceanography ; submitted by Whitman,... : M183-2/933E-PDF
"This study, initiated by Mr. K. Manchester of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO), is concerned with an investigation into the type, performance and feasibility of installing a towing winch on BIO ships, Hudson, Baffin and Dawson. The primary purpose of the winch is to tow deep ocean survey instrumentation, such as the Sea-Marc system, in order to acquire survey information in water depths up to 20,000 feet. A secondary requirement is that the winch be capable of piston coring to depths of 20,000 feet with a 3,000 lb corer, and also capable of handling the BIO rock core drill in water depths up to 11,600 feet"--Introd., p. 1.
