"The overall impact of acid rain on Canadian forests and the effectiveness of alternative pollution control programs in preventing forest damage are highly uncertain. However, a survey of scientific experts, carried out by Forestry Canada, sheds considerable light on the potential effects. Firstly, the results of this survey are used to identify the risk of forest damage without further pollution controls, and the expected forest productivity benefits of two alternative pollution control programs. Secondly, the relationship between these forest productivity changes and the future commercial timber harvest is explored. Finally, the social and economic benefits of the two pollution control programs are estimated"--Abstract, p. 5.
