"The percent occurrence of herring in the diet of Gulf of St. Lawrence cod and the geographic and seasonal patterns of herring predation by cod are presented for the periods 1959-73 and 1980-81. Using a consumption model, estimates of the dietary fraction attributable to herring, cod numbers-at-age from SPA, and the total and herring food biomass eaten by cod age groups 3 to 13 was calculated for the above time series in a defined area and season. Predation on herring appeared most intense during the summer to early fall months in the Shediac Valley-Miscou Bank area. Herring was not a major food component of cod younger than 8 years (,%5E;70 an). Year to year variation in herring predation was substantial with high levels estimated for the early and late 1960's and low levels in the most current years. Herring biomass consumed by cod was positively correlated with 2 + 3 year-old herring biomass during the years 1969-73 and 1979-80."
