The urbanization of rural land in Canada : 1966-1971 and 1971-1976 / by C. Leigh Warren and Paul C. Rump, Canada Land Use Monitoring Program = Urbanisation des terres rurales au Canada : 1966-1971 et 1971-1976... : En73-1/20-PDF
"Approximately 80 per cent of Canadians live in cities and towns. It is the lands adjacent to these settlements, the rural-urban fringes, where the demand for land is high resulting in relatively rapid changes in land use. These fringe areas also contain some of the best land in Canada for supporting activities based on renewable resources. This juxtaposition of high population density and inherently valuable land results in serious conflicts in land use exemplified by the irretrievable loss of farmland, forest land, wetlands, and other special wildlife habitats. This study focuses on the amount of rural land lost to direct urbanization, that is land that has become part of the urban built-up area. The time period studied spans the five years from 1971 to 1976. Comparisons are made with data derived from an earlier Lands Directorate study which provided similar information for the period 1966 to 1971. The eighty Urban Areas comprising the study population represent those centres with populations of over 25,000 according to the 1976 Census of Canada"--Abstract, page iv.
