Surges from ice jam releases : a case study / S. Beltaos and B.G. Krishnappan. : En36-522/89-1980E-PDF
"The discharges and levels reached downstream of an ice jam when it breaks is not easily analyzed hydraulically because of the unknown effects from the ice. In this report, certain, assumptions were made and an adaptation of the MOBED model was applied to compute stages and discharge as a function of time. The results are compared with an observed collapse of an ice jam. The method is applicable to other situations but at this time the reliability of the computation is uncertain. This study represents a significant advance in the hydraulics of ice jams but more field data must be analyzed to ascertain the reliability of the computation method in a statistical sense"--Management perspective.
