"Given a shift register which is connected in a feedback fashion as to generate a string of seemingly random numbers, it is very straightforward to calculate the state of the shift register (each stage being 0 or 1) given an initial state and a number of shifts or clock pulses applied to the shift register. It has, until now, been considered very difficult, given two states of the shift register, to determine the number of clock pulses that have been applied to the shift register in getting from one state to the other, especially for long shift registers"--Executive summary.
