"All 125 men and women pictured here are Companions of the Order of Canada, an honour created in 1967, in the heady days of our centennial celebrations. The atmosphere of that time enabled us to look at ourselves with a new, and newly confident, sense of who we are and what we can accomplish. Filled with pleasure in the past and optimism for the future, Canadians decided that we should recognize those remarkable men and women in every field, from every part of the country, who make life better for their region, for their fellow citizens, or for all humankind. Since then, members of the Order have comprised an elite — not of birth or wealth or position — but of talent, energy, and commitment to service"--Foreword, page 8.
