"Twenty-five Comprehensive Land Claim Agreements, many of which include self-government arrangements (henceforth, modern treaties), are now in effect. The first modern treaty, the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA), was signed in 1975. These agreements, which cover more than 40 percent of Canada’s landmass, are documents of fundamental importance for Canada, provinces or territories and the Aboriginal signatories"--Executive summary, page 6.
