Assessment of haddock in NAFO division 5Z / by Stratis Gavaris. : Fs70-8/87-101E-PDF

"In 1985 and 1986, the Canadian landings were 3485 t and 3413 t, respectively, accounting for about half of the total catch. USA landings have declined substantially since 1984. The majority of the Canadian and USA catches in 1986 were comprised of 3-yr-old haddock, the 1983 year-class. Both Canadian and USA research surveys indicate that the 1985 year-class is larger than the average recent recruitment. The results of the assessment suggest that fishing mortality has been relatively high, about 0.3 to 0.5, for ages 3 and older. The abundance and biomass of the stock are at about the lowest level since 1963 and few older fish remain in the population"--Abstract, page 2.
