"In the winter of 1991 upper air soundings from the Egbert Radiometer became available to the forecasters at the Ontario Weather Centre on an experimental basis. This technology has been touted as part of a system that could supplement radiosonde data. Hence, some knowledge on how these devices work, and what their strengths and weaknesses are will prove useful. The purpose of this paper is to provide the reader with a basic understanding of the physical processes behind the construction of an atmospheric temperature profile using radiometer data. Some of the difficulties that must be overcome in order to construct such a profile will also be dealt with, as well as some findings on the operational reliability of these soundings"--Introduction.
