"Of particular interest in an investigation of the salt tolerance of micro organisms is a flora of halophyllic bacteria which grow freely on media saturated with sodium chloride. In as much as even 5% sodium chloride would represent the maximum salt tolerance of the great majority of micro organisms, the matter of interest to the writer and the object of this investigation was a study of those factors which might explain the halophyllic properties of this group, and throw light on the mechanism of salt action"--Page [1].
