Diatoms - an attempt to determine their fate / author Nelda E. Wright. : Fs52-3/81E-PDF

"It has been known for some time that the diatoms vary greatly in number throughout the year: they have their maxima and minima. If, then, the diatoms were eaten, it would seem logical that there should be some correlation between these maxima and minima, and those of the animals by which they were devoured. Since the copepods are by far the most common pelagic animals, an attempt was made to correlate their variations in number with those of the diatoms"--Page 2.
