"This Guideline provides advice for assessing the trophic status of upper estuaries in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. Many of these systems, particularly in Prince Edward Island, receive high external nitrate loads that come primarily from row crop agriculture. Nutrient enrichment can lead to eutrophication, which can result in the loss of eelgrass beds, reduced biodiversity, and greater fluctuations in dissolved oxygen concentrations. In highly eutrophic estuaries, anoxic events may also occur"--Executive summary, page 4.
