"The allium crops are members of the Amaryllidaceae and are cultivated and consumed world-wide. In Canada, several allium crops are produced commercially including dry onion (Allium cepa), green onion (A. cepa), shallots (A. cepa var. aggregatum) and garlic (A. sativum). In 2012, a total of 6,775 hectares were planted to these crops which comprised 7% of total hectares planted to vegetable crops in Canada"--p. [1].
