Modelling biofilm consumption in open-channel flow / by Y.L. Lau.: En13-5/89-69E-PDF

"An analytical model of the loss of substrate in an open channel flow through the consumption by a bottom biofilm is presented. This idealized model considers the flux of substrate by diffusion through the viscous sublayer into the biofilm. with diffusion and reaction within the biofilm. Solutions for zero-order as well as first order kinetics are presented and it is shown that the rate of change of the concentration in the main flow is directly related to the kinetics in the biofilm. Available field data were analysed in an attempt to investigate the dependence of the dimensionless loss rate coefficient on the shear Reynolds number of the flow"-- Abstract.
