"Thirty-nine briefs submitted to the Royal Commission on the Status of Women recommend one or more changes in the tax system. The major question raised by the briefs that is both relevant to the Commission and still unresolved is the appropriate taxation of the incomes of unmarried women and married women with dependants. The present income tax system poses problems of serious concern to women. The Carter Commission recommended changes that some women believe would be even more unfortunate than the present provisions.
